This project was an extension of literature read in class, as well as an application of skills being taught in Everyday Math. Students completed the project in several stages. First, they wrote their name in large, block letters on a piece of gray construction paper. Children were instructed to try and make their letters as big and straight as possible. Then, they traced over their name using a black oil pastel. Next, students extended all the straight lines in each letter of their names, so that it went all the way to the edge of the page. For example, if a student had the letter ‘T’ in their name, then they would make one horizontal line all the way across the paper, stemming from the horizontal line on the ‘T’, and then one vertical line all the way up and down the paper. In doing this, students were able to apply math vocabulary, such as ‘straightedge’ and ‘line segment.’ Children were also able to practice the skill of using a straightedge to create a line segment. After extending all the lines of their name, children had a paper full of different sized squares, rectangles, and other geometric shapes. Then, using oil pastels, students colored in each box. Children based their ideas for their color schemes on the illustrations in the book Elmer by David McKee, which we read together as a class on the same day. The only stipulation for their coloring was that a shape could not be touching another shape of the same color. This was a wonderful project, and students absolutely loved seeing their names transformed this way. It took about two hours for all students to complete the project.

4B Ancient Civilizations

For our Unit of Inquiry on Ancient Civilizations Mr Chambers' class discussed the importance of trade as spreading ideas, food and wealth. Using Google earth we talked about the large amount of shipwreck site around the Mediterranean. A lot of these ancient archaeological sites contained intact amphorae with their contents still inside. After looking at a number of Archaeological sites we discussed the differences between primary and Secondary sources. A time line was also used to place civilizations in the correct time period. Asking the children to work out the distances between sites as well as centres of trade brought a math element to our inquiry. After researching different Amphorae the students came up with their own designs.

Using a separate piece of card the students were able to choose their colours and practice tonal changes using the neon chalk pastels. We discussed the importance of tone in adding three dimensionality.

Flickr

This is a test post from , a fancy photo sharing thing.

Just updated the netvibes with widgets to Voki and Blurb..... no really they're websites..
